Shopping in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is one of my favourite cities in the whole world. The shopping here is really good, and there is absolutely no problem in getting rid of your money. What really stands out is the very nice, genuinely interested and polite shop assistants in this city. It never seizes to amaze me, and is probably one of the reasons why I always return. One of the nicest things for non-scandinavians are all the shops with Scandinavian design.

My absolute favourite area is the area around Strøget – the pedestrian area in the city centre. There is good shopping to be found in other areas as well as in Fredriksberg and Nørrebro, but my favourite remains Strøget and the streets surrounding it.

Here are a few of the shops I make sure I visit:

Vinoble

This is a wonderful wine and spirits shop, just a hop and skip away from the Skt. Petri hotel. The staff really knows their stuff and have time to give you good advice. They have a really impressive amount of spirits (about 1200 different ones, and some seriously good wine (2000 different ones). Every time I’m there I discover a new favourite. So, if you are interested in wine, you should not miss out.

Georg Jensen Flagship store

The danes are famous for their design, and this is really evident at their flagship store showing not only jewellery but also their beautiful homeware. Maybe this is where you’ll find a gift to take home, or just a really nice “souvenir” to remind you of the good times in Copenhagen. You’ll find this store smack in the middle of Strøget, in the beautiful square of Amagertorv. Georg Jensen is more than a hundred years old, and throughout its history it has been known for great design. You will have to look hard to find a Scandinavian home without a product from this firm, be it jewellery, Christmas decorations or just their everyday products like cutlery. Check out their products here: https://www.georgjensen.com/

Royal Copenhagen porcelain flagship store

https://www.royalcopenhagen.com/home is situated just beside Georg Jensen (If I remember correctly there is just a Disney shop between them, and this you can safely skip!) The store showcases their lovely porcelain, some of their lines date back to the 1770s. Last time I brought back the alphabet mug and plate as a nice memento.

Ole Lynggaard Flagship store

https://www.olelynggaard.com/en/find-store/copenhagen-city.htm in Ny Østergade 4, the first side street to Strøget. A beautiful flagship store, with amazing, spectacular and very expensive jewellery is also worth a visit. And if you do no enter you should at least gaze at their spectacular window displays.

Illum

Illumis a department store situated on Strøget. It has a big makeup department, and lots of international high end brands. It had a makeover a couple of years back, and is now a very nice department store, with free personal shopper should that tickle your fancy. On Illum rooftop there are several nice restaurants should all the shopping have made you hungry. https://illum.dk/

Illums bolighus

Illums Bolighus a little further down Strøget focuses on all things to your home including furniture, bed linen, cutlery etc. In short they have the best of whatever you need, and shows a lot of Danish design. I spend hours here….

A.C. Perch

A quirky tea shop beloved by the Danes, in Kronprinsens gade 5 is a must for all tea lovers.

Peter Hertz

Forside

Jeweller, and royal jeweller has a wide range of jewels ranging from Ole Lyngaard to their own lovely designs.

You will also find flagship stores of Scandinavian brands such as Acne, Bitte Kai Rand and Filippa K. On my last visit I found a very nice shop selling stuff from german brand OSKA. Their clothes have clean and very simple shapes, very timeless and they use lovely materials. I fell completely in love, and you should check it out on Silkegade 21.

In Strøget and the streets surrounding it you will also find international brands like Max Mara, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton etc, but they are everywhere, and not what sets a city apart.

In Nørrebro you will find the food halls, and if you are a foodie like me, you should not miss out. Torvhallernes history dates back to 1889, and over 115 000 visit EVERY WEEK! You’ll find Torvhallerne near Nørreport metro station, and they are easy to find. You will find fresh food, cheeses, spices, small places to eat and taste and almost all things food related.

One of the great pleasures of Copenhagen is discovering your Copenhagen – finding the stores and little cafés you love, and just soak up the atmosphere. I hope you will find your Copenhagen, just as I have found mine.
